In a Monday night interview on Fox News, Brett Kavanaugh gave the Republicans working overtime to defend him against sexual assault allegations the night off. Though the Supreme Court nominee now faces accusations from more than one woman, he told the conservative network that he was a virgin in high school, and remained one for years afterward. But as Seth Meyers noted on a particularly merciless Late Night segment, this defense is utterly irrelevant.
“It does not matter if you were a virgin,” Meyers said Tuesday night. “You are being accused of sexual assault, not sexual intercourse. Those things have nothing to do with each other. It’s the same as saying, ‘I couldn’t have robbed that bank; I’m a virgin.’”
Besides, “devoting yourself to celibacy doesn’t mean you can’t be a sexual assaulter; just ask thousands of priests.” As his audience groaned at the thought, Meyers challenged, “Ask them! Go ahead and ask them.”
Meyers also had no time for Kavanaugh insisting that he is close with plenty of women, like the 65 who signed a letter of support for him. “Just because you are friends with one woman doesn’t mean you haven’t been awful to another,” Meyers said. “That’s like saying you’re a vegetarian because you didn’t eat your dog.”
Legal representatives of Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s first accuser, have four signed and sworn statements corroborating her allegations. Meanwhile, Kavanaugh faces a second allegation from his college years, with another accuser, a former U.S. Mint employee, possibly about to speak up. Kavanaugh has continually denied all the allegations against him.
Still, as Meyers noted on Tuesday night, Kavanaugh’s choice of outlet for his TV interview may have been misguided—considering Fox News’s own history with sexual assault allegations, which is sordid enough to merit a movie adaptation. “Going to Fox News to prove you’re not a pervert,” Meyers said, “is like doing the word search to prove you’re smart.”
