Kacy Rodgers back with Jets after ‘serious’ illness

The Jets will be a little more complete this week, as defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers has been cleared to return to work after suffering a health scare.

Rodgers did not coach in the last two games after suffering an illness that Bowles called “serious.” Rodgers did watch Sunday’s game from a suite and was in the postgame locker-room celebration.

“He’s been cleared and he should be ready to go,” Bowles said Monday afternoon on a conference call with reporters. “We’ll ease him in slowly depending on how he feels, but he’s doing a lot better.”

Bowles said Rodgers will coach Sunday against the Vikings, but he was unsure if he would be the play-caller or if Bowles would still be doing it as Rodgers works his way back to 100 percent.

“Anytime you get somebody who gets sick on you or has some type of illness, you worry about him wholeheartedly,” Bowles said. “The job doesn’t matter, it’s all about the person, getting healthy. It’s a big relief for us.”

The 49-year-old Rodgers has served as the Jets defensive coordinator since 2015. He is beloved by his players, who were all happy to see him return.

“He’s a good spirit, he has great energy and he’s a great coach,” nose tackle Steve McLendon said. “It’s always awesome to see a guy come back, especially for the things he’s been through the last two weeks. He gets to come back to the game he loves. My concern is, as long as he has his health, that’s all that matters.”

Bowles declined to say exactly what Rodgers’ illness is. He said it will be up to Rodgers if he wants to say that publicly.
