Kevin Durant’s next potential foray into free agency is still more than eight months away, but his recruitment to New York already has begun, at least in the form of a billboard outside of Madison Square Garden.
Durant, who is in town with the Warriors to face the Knicks on Friday night, indicated he already was aware of — but not particularly impressed by — the billboard, which implored him to “make NY sports great again.”
“To be honest, I don’t know how to feel about that type of stuff. It’s cool, no disrespect, but I’m not really impressed with that type of stuff,” Durant said after the Warriors practiced Thursday night in Midtown. “I just really like playing basketball. I try to focus. My entertainment is really what happens on the basketball court. For me, I don’t really get up for that stuff.”
Durant controls a player option for the final year of his contract and can become a free agent next summer, and the Knicks are expected to have enough cap space to sign someone to a maximum deal.
A marketing company posted the billboard on Seventh Avenue depicting an illustration of Durant holding the NBA’s Larry O’Brien Trophy alongside injured Knicks star Kristaps Porzingis, along with the hashtag #KDNY2019.
