Please Don’t Let This Amy Winehouse Hologram Tour Be Real

A depressing announcement indicates that 2019 may not be any better than 2018: there’s going to be an Amy Winehouse hologram tour.

The British songstress died in 2011 at the age of 27, due to her alcohol and drug addiction, and is still mourned by an army of fans. Mitch Winehouse, stage father of the late Amy, tweeted on Thursday that he is collaborating with BASE Hologram to produce the tour, the proceeds of which will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which provides services for drug and alcohol abuse affecting young people.

That’s all well and good—but it’s still hard not to be highly skeptical about a holographic tour. Remember when Tupac came onstage to perform with Dr. Dre at Coachella in 2012? People are still thinking about how weird that was. Currently, a Roy Orbison hologram is touring, sponsored by both BASE and famed opera singer Maria Callas. (Wow, Roy ORbison really having a time right now!)

Brian Becker, founder and CEO of BASE, has been careful to speak respectfully about Winehouse and her music. “Amy was a powerhouse in every sense of the word,” he said in a statement. “She played by her own rules, pioneered her own sense of style of music, and because of that, we know she is the perfect person to headline this type of project.”

The company also says that the tour will feature digitally remastered versions of Winehouse’s biggest hits, and will be backed by a live band, singers and “theatrical stagecraft,” whatever that means. Again, which sounds fine—though nothing, of course, could ever compare to the real Amy.
