An unexpected name has been added to the Jets’ injury list, suddenly putting Leonard Williams’ availability for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis into question.
Williams, who registered five tackles and two sacks in last Sunday’s 34-16 win over Denver, didn’t practice Thursday after reporting with what Todd Bowles described as a sore back.
“He just woke up like that,” Bowles said without elaborating on Williams’ status after practice.
Cornerbacks Trumaine Johnson (quad) and Buster Skrine (concussion) and running back Isaiah Crowell (ankle) also didn’t participate for the second consecutive day.
Wide receiver Terrelle Pryor also was excused from practice for personal reasons, but it was not injury related, according to the team. “He has permission,” Bowles said.
Safety Marcus Maye is still beating himself up over his 104-yard interception return on the final play against Denver, in which he was tackled a yard shy of the end zone by Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton.
“I’ve seen it a bunch and I laugh every time I see it,” Maye said. “I feel like once I got across the 50 and back to our sideline, all train of thought went out the window. I didn’t even see No. 14 back there. All I saw was that O-lineman. But once I hit the ground I was like ‘Oh, man.’ [Sutton] had a great effort, but I have to get in the end zone some way.”
Rookie linebacker Darius Leonard has emerged as a disruptive force for Indianapolis, with 54 combined tackles and four sacks through five games. According to the Colts, Leonard was limited in practice on Thursday with an ankle injury.
“Heck of a football player,” Bowles said. “He gets to the ball, he’s always around the ball, very quick, understands the game. He’s a good football player, somebody you have to know where he is on the field.”
Bruce Arians, Bowles’ college coach at Temple and his head coach when he was a defensive coordinator with the Cardinals, will serve as the game analyst for Sunday’s contest on CBS. Asked if Arians would air any of his secrets on the broadcast, Bowles quipped: “Hopefully, it’s not any college secrets. … I try to keep that chapter closed, but that’ll be scary.”
