If this were the most meaningless cover-up in cover-up history, it was not well orchestrated.
ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” repeatedly flashed to a bar in Mexico City during the pulsating Chiefs-Rams game, a nod to show Mexico still could appreciate the game from afar. The matchup originally had been scheduled for Azteca Stadium, but it was moved to Los Angeles last week because of troublesome field conditions.
The fans inside the bar seemed happy. They celebrated when the cameras were on. And they seemed to be at a Buffalo Wild Wings, even if that was never disclosed.
“All those Rams fans at the Alboa bar in Mexico City, they’re loving it,” play-by-player Joe Tessitore said at one cutaway. Tessitore repeatedly referred to the “Alboa bar,” which does not exist. (There is an Alboa Santa Fe in Mexico.)
Viewers on Twitter were on it. Screenshots were taken showing the “Buffalo Wild Wings” branding on glasses. Squinting eyes were pointed at ketchup bottles.
ESPN confirmed it was, indeed, a Mexico City Buffalo Wild Wings. The Worldwide Leader did not immediately know how the mixup occurred.
Viewers were confused, but also numerous. ESPN said the 11.3 rating for the showdown was the best for a Monday night game since 2014.
