Councilman Jumaane Williams has secured the backing of the Working Families Party and other progressive activists in his bid to become to become the city’s next public advocate, sources said Tuesday night.
The endorsements from the WFP and the New York Progressive Action Network will be announced at an 11 a.m. press conference at City Hall Wednesday, sources said.
The WFP’s city regional committee overwhelmingly voted to support Williams Tuesday night.
The Progressive Action Network voted to endorse Williams at a Monday meeting.
“Jumaane is an amazing activist and a great representative on the City Council,” said NYPAN co-chairman George Albro.
The lefty groups also backed Wiliams during his campaign earlier this year for lieutenant governor. He had a surprisingly strong showing despite losing the Democratic primary to Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The current public advocate, Letitia James, was just elected state attorney general, creating a vacancy in January. A special election to replace her will take place next February.
Williams is not without baggage. He defaulted on a home loan and a car in his name racked up 18 speeding tickets in school zones.
