The hotly anticipated flashback episode of “Riverdale” dropped, and it’s a doozy.
Spoilers below.
“The Midnight Club,” traveled back in time to the ’90s, when the Riverdale parents were high schoolers themselves. During their youth, they were privy to a dark secret connected to the town’s current string of murders stemming from a sinister role-playing game (don’t ask).
The gimmick: each young star of the CW series plays the teen version of their parent.
Since most of the River-adults are ‘90s stars, this gives KJ Apa (who plays Archie) a chance to do his best impression of Luke Perry circa “Beverly Hills 90210,” and Lili Reinhart (Betty) channels a “Twin Peaks” era Madchen Amick (who plays Alice).
The episode isn’t just impressions and killer ’90s hair, though. It also reveals that Cheryl Blossom’s (Madelaine Petsch) mother isn’t a Blossom at all, but an orphan the Blossoms adopted for the totally non-creepy purpose of marrying their son. Leave it to “Riverdale” to have a “Flowers in the Attic” like twist.
It also reveals that the first victim of the sinister board game was none other than their former principal—played by guest star Anthony Michael Hall (“The Breakfast Club”), to hammer in the retro references.
All in all, the episode was much more than wigs and impressions of former ‘90s stars—but those were fun, too.
