On Monday, The View devoted a lengthy segment to President Donald Trump’s interview with Fox News reporter Chris Wallace, in which the president blasted retired Admiral Bill McRaven for not getting Osama bin Laden “sooner.” As always, the panel had a lot to say about the matter, but no one was more vocal than Meghan McCain, who slammed Trump for the “disrespect” he has repeatedly shown towards the military. In one particularly fiery moment, McCain promised that her “head would have exploded” had Obama acted as Trump has, and she implored her fellow conservatives to not be “gaslit into thinking this is normal.”
During Trump’s interview on Sunday, Wallace confronted the president about his combative relationship to the media and the world’s view that he’s a “beacon for repression.” The women of The View agreed with Wallace on this point, including McCain, although she noted that “there is a difference” between the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi and Trump’s ongoing feud with CNN. But even more pressing, according to McCain, is Trump’s “disrespect” of the military and American veterans.
“We should be intellectually honest here at this table that if President Obama had missed Veterans Day or missed the armistice ceremony in France for the 100th anniversary of World War I, my head would have exploded on this table in front of all of you,” said McCain. “And I think there’s this whole collection of, sort of, disrespect towards the military and towards our veterans and towards our history that I don’t know if he’s aware how intense it is for those of us who still respect our legacy, who still respect the military.”
McCain went on to say that Bill McRaven is “an admiral who put his life on the line,” and, as such, he deserves our respect. “I think that’s where we can’t be gaslit into thinking this is normal, especially as conservatives,” she said. “Because, again, had President Obama done this, I would be screaming bloody murder on this show.” McCain’s speech was met with a massive round of applause from the audience, who seemed to appreciate the (uncharacteristically) even-handed sentiment.
McCain’s comments begin at around the 2:55 mark above.
