7-year-old girl dies in Customs and Border Protection custody

A 7-year-old girl suffering from dehydration reportedly died in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection after falling ill last week.

The little girl, who was traveling from Guatemala with her father, was detained on Oct. 6 along with a group of migrants who turned themselves in to US agents along a desolate stretch of New Mexico, according to The Washington Post.

The girl, who had not eaten or consumed water for several days, began having seizures about 8 hours after she was put in CBP custody, the paper said.

When paramedics arrived her body temperature was 105.7 degrees. She was taken by helicopter to a hospital in El Paso.

Once there, the girl went into cardiac arrest and was revived — but later succumbed to her sickness.

“The child did not recover and died at the hospital less than 24 hours after being transported,” CBP said.

The incident is under investigation. It was not clear if the girl, who was detained at 10 p.m., was given food or water in the hours before her seizure.
