Assistant NYPD chief retires to move into private sector

One of the highest ranking African American women in the NYPD is retiring to move into the private sector, the Post has learned.

Assistant Chief Juanita Holmes — the second African American woman in department history to be honored with the title — is putting away her badge and uniform to work in the world of banking, police sources told the Post.

Holmes, who came on the job in 1987, served as commanding officer of the Domestic Violence Unit before being promoted to a two-star chief in charge of Patrol Borough Queens North in 2016 — becoming the NYPD’s first female African American borough commander.

The history-making chief previously told the Post she had dreams of rising up the ranks even further.

“I wanna be Commissioner! I’m the one that wants to be Chief of Department, Chief of Patrol,” she said, in a previously unreported interview with the Post. “There’s nothing on this job that a woman can’t do. There really, really isn’t.”

Holmes confirmed to the Post that she is leaving, but would not immediately comment any further.
