Saudi Arabia denounces US Senate resolution implicating Crown Prince MBS in Khashoggi murder

Saudi Arabia has slammed the US Senate for passing a resolution that accused its Crown Prince of ‘complicity’ in the Jamal Khashoggi murder, seeking to reinforce that the incident in no way reflects a statewide policy.

“Saudi Arabia deplores the recent position of the United States Senate, which was based on allegations and accusations that are unfounded and include blatant interference [in the kingdom’s domestic affairs],” a Foreign Ministry official said, according to the state news agency.

The ministry emphasized that “surprising” actions and statements by American officials undermined the kingdom’s sovereignty and the “status” of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who’d worked for decades on building economic and security ties between the countries.

It has already been confirmed that what happened to Jamal Khashoggi is a crime that does not reflect the policy of the Kingdom or the approach of its institutions.

But even though the US Senate had sent a “wrong message” that had damaged bilateral relations, Riyadh is nevertheless willing to maintain ties with the US, with the ministry reminding Washington that the Gulf state acts as a “cornerstone” of peace and security at both regional and international levels.
