Tommy Chong Revealed as The Pineapple on ‘The Masked Singer’

On Wednesday night, The Masked Singer introduced fans to its remaining six contestants, a group that included The Poodle, The Bee, The Alien, and more. After a hard-fought battle, The Pineapple fell to The Raven, and later in the show, he was revealed to be none other than… comedian and stoner extraordinaire Tommy Chong. Even more shocking than Chong’s reveal is that panelist Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg — who has been consistently offering ridiculous, half-hearted suggestions — actually (well, kind of) guessed his identity correctly. Maybe she really is a pop culture guru, after all (I’m still doubtful).

From The Pineapple’s first introduction, it was clear he was a laid-back guy. He described himself as “fun, tropical, and go[es] well with ham” and called himself an “OG,” suggesting that he may be one of The Masked Singer‘s older contestants. However, it’s not all fun and games with The Pineapple. “Although I look happy now, I’ve gone through some dark times,” he said before revealing that he is known for “beating a life-threatening disease.” As he revealed his interest in singing, the video showed images of a Yin and yang (maybe identifying him as part of a duo?), a Michigan license plate, and a bumper sticker reading “Pipe Dream.” Said The Pineapple, “Life is short, man. You’ve gotta seize the day before your dreams go up in smoke.”

The Pineapple then performed Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” and despite his gravelly, country music-esque voice, it was pretty obvious he wasn’t a singer. It was therefore no surprise when he fell to The Raven, who wowed the audience with her emotional performance. At the end of the show, The Pineapple was revealed to have received the least amount of votes (The Alien and The Poodle lived to fight another day), but before he took off his mask, the panelists got in one final round of guesses. “I’m definitely thinking more stoner, like, Willie Nelson. Who else is a stoner? Cheech or Chong?” said McCarthy. She waffled, but ultimately ended up going with “Cheech.” Other guesses included Sugar Ray Leonard, Jimmy Buffett, and Kid Rock.

When The Pineapple finally took off his mask, Tommy Chong’s face smiled back at the audience. “You’ve got to tell us, what would make you do something like put a pineapple on your head and sing ‘I Will Survive,’” said host Nick Cannon. “Anything to get on stage,” laughed Chong.

Who will The Masked Singer unveil next? Tune in next Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on Fox to find out.
