Why Serena Williams Thinks Her Daughter Could Be Cut Out for Sports

Serena Williams’s daughter, Alexis Olympia, isn’t even two years old, but according to her mother she’s already displaying some shared traits with her famous tennis family. The tennis powerhouse spoke to Allure about her life as one of the world’s greatest athletes and a new mom, a challenge she’s embraced to the fullest.

“I have a picture from when I was, like, two years old. My arms are ripped. If you look at my daughter, she has a very similar body type,” she said of Olympia, who was born in September 2017. The mother and daughter were both on the cover of Vogue in February 2018. Williams has already said she won’t push her daughter into playing tennis, and she doesn’t think she would be a good coach, so Olympia might not follow in her mom’s footsteps.

Williams also said that she was one of “those annoying people” who loved being pregnant. Last summer, she told InStyle that if she weren’t back to work, she would already be pregnant again.

For now, though, her focus is tennis and her daughter.

“I want her to know that being strong is never easy. Not in this world we are living in . . . Standing up for yourself is not going to be easy, but it’s always eventually respected,” she told Allure. “Those are the people who’ve made a difference in this world: people that stand up for what’s right. If you look at history, those are the people that you really remember.“

Williams is set to compete at the Australian Open later this month, a tournament she won in 2017, but did not participate in last year due to Olympia’s recent birth.
