The Duke and Duchess of Sussex landed in Casablanca, Morocco this evening to a king’s welcome. After a flight delay of an hour, the couple finally touched down a little after 9 P.M. local time.

The couple are visiting Casablanca, Asni, and Rabat during the three-day trip. Royal aides confirmed that will spend the night at one of the King of Morocco’s royal residences as his private guests, but refused to identify which residence. The couple’s busy program begins in earnest tomorrow and will see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle carry out seven engagements over the next two days.

The secrecy around where the couple are staying comes amid reports that the Duke and Duchess will not be carrying out walkabouts because of security concerns. There have been riots in the capital city of Rabat, where teachers have been taking to the streets over pay and healthcare.  According to the Mirror, emergency “exit plans” have been coordinated between royal protection officers and British security services.

Tomorrow Harry and Meghan will visit Asni where they will visit a school boarding house run by Education For All, an organization which provides education for girls in rural areas of the country. Meghan will also take part in a Henna ceremony. In the evening they will attend a formal reception hosted by the Thomas Reilly, the British ambassador to Morocco, in Rabat, where they will meet influential women, young entrepreneurs and disabled athletes.

The tour, which comes at the request of the British Foreign Office, has a diplomatic purpose. “The visit is a recognition of the strong relationship between our two countries,” Reilly said on Twitter earlier this month. “It is a chance to enjoy Morocco’s history and look to its future, focusing on the role of women, youth and education in making that future.” The couple has represented the Royal Family overseas on a few occasions, making a visit to Dublin shortly after their wedding and carrying out a 16-day Commonwealth tour in October.

The couple are traveling with an entourage of eight staff, including three press officers and a hairdresser. Aides confirmed that medical provisions have also been made for the Duchess who is believed to be seven-and-a-half months pregnant.

This is a developing story.
