Anne Hathaway Is Not Done Mocking the Oscars She Hosted with James Franco

Going into Sunday’s Oscars, it’s hard to know what to expect. Up until this point, the plan for who will host, present, and accept awards on air at the show has been a bit of a roller coaster. But for anyone who’s worried, Anne Hathaway has some comforting words of wisdom: “No matter what happens with today’s show, just remember, it’s already been worse. Happy Oscars!”

The Oscar winner posted her comment alongside a photo of herself with her fellow 2011 Academy Awards emcee, James Franco. As you may remember, their hosting gig quickly went down in history as one of the most awkward nights the annual gala has ever seen—and that’s despite having no shortage of competition. One silver lining? Eight years later, Hathaway is clearly over any embarrassment about the night; in fact, she’s made fun of it herself before tonight.

Speaking recently with People, Hathaway dished that it was Franco who allegedly talked her into co-hosting the Oscars in the first place—after she had already tried to turn the gig down. “Your first instinct is usually the right one,” Hathaway said, pointing out that “all the reasons why I turned it down came true.” (Representatives for Franco did not respond to V.F.’s request for comment at the time.) In 2015, Hathaway also offered upcoming host Neil Patrick Harris some playful advice that poked fun at her ignominious hosting gig: “Do the opposite of what I did.” We’d share that advice with this year’s host, but—well, you know . . .
