Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder OFF: Promoter Frank Warren remains hopeful of rematch in September/October this year

Tyson Fury’s promoter Frank Warren still expects a rematch with Deontay Wilder to go ahead in 2019 after it was confirmed the ‘Gypsy King’ will face a different opponent next.

The WBC had ordered a second bout between the two heavyweights following their thrilling, controversial draw in December which saw Wilder retain the belt.

But due to Fury’s lucrative new deal with Top Rank, which sees ESPN become the exclusive broadcaster of his fights in the United States, the Brit must pursue an ‘exposure’ fight in America before taking on Wilder.

“It’s not our doing,” Warren told talkSPORT. “ESPN and Top Rank are insisting that they want to give Tyson an exposure fight in the US first, and then go to this fight [against Wilder] afterwards.

“It’s unfortunate, but I’m hoping we get this fight on in September or October. Fingers crossed.

“I’m hoping that this Wilder fight does go on. I’m very disappointed that we’re not going straight to it but it’s beyond our control.

“[The next fight] will be against whoever we can agree with. At the moment, we’re waiting for the list of fighters, and once we’ve got it we’ll pick the opponent.

“He [Fury] needs to get out. He’s not fought since December and I don’t think we’ll get him in the ring until June.”

Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua has also declared plans to fight either Fury or Wilder in 2019.

The IBF, WBA and WBO belt holder, who faces Jarrell Miller in New York on June 1, would become undisputed heavyweight champion of the world with victory over Wilder, but negotiations between the two camps have failed miserably thus far.

Joshua told talkSPORT: “Let’s say we have a crystal ball and I beat Miller up, we could have that fight [Wilder] in December if we can put whatever issues there are to bed.

“But in terms of Fury, I think that could happen sooner.”

However, Warren insists that Fury vs Wilder II remains his priority, and that Joshua should’ve taken earlier opportunities to fight the two heavyweights.

“If Anthony Joshua doesn’t fight Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder, who’s he got? No-one. He’s fighting no-one at the moment. His next fight is against Jarrell Miller,” Warren added.

“He had the opportunity to fight these guys and he turned it down.”

When asked about the prospect of an all-Brit heavyweight showdown between Joshua and Fury, Warren suggested it could happen, but not until 2020.

“These guys are going to have to fight each other, otherwise it will become farcical. These guys will have to put their self-interest aside to make these fights happen,” he continued.

“I don’t think [Fury vs Joshua] will happen this year, I really don’t. If it does happen, it’ll be next year.

“My gut feeling is, provided we can strike the deal with Deontay Wilder, I’m hoping that’ll be the next fight and that’ll be what we’re moving heaven and earth to make happen.”
