Jimmy Fallon has heard some shocking true confessions in his time hosting The Tonight Show, but it will be hard to top the one John Mulaney dropped on Thursday night: apparently, the Emmy-winning comedian once had a neighbor arrested by the F.B.I. for being a cannibal.
Davidson was shocked to hear Mulaney’s story, which neither he nor Fallon believed was true until Mulaney confirmed it during the game—in which one player makes an outlandish statement, and the rest guess whether it is true or a lie. Davidson said with a laugh that Mulaney has probably told him this story before, but Mulaney said he had not; “I’ve lived a full life,” the comedian quipped. “There’s many stories.”
Other confessions included Fallon saying he’d once grabbed a beer with one of the members of country duo Big & Rich, only to wake up in Nashville (as both Davidson and Mulaney guessed, true), and Davidson saying that only eight episodes into his Saturday Night Live career, he went on vacation to Jamaica with S.N.L. boss Lorne Michaels for New Year’s. Davidson did, however, stay in a different hotel from his boss, to keep some of his shenanigans a secret—because, as he put it, “I would have been fired if I stayed there.”
The Davidson-Mulaney bromance has been developing for a while now, especially since the two began touring together in January. It has been a constant source of fascination for obvious reasons: outwardly, at least, these two could not seem less alike. Just look at a pair of photos Mulaney showed off during his Tonight Show appearance, picturing his and Davidson’s very different dressing rooms. (Mulaney’s had a bunch of fruit and some almond milk; Davidson’s had a cigarette butt in a water bottle cap and what appears, at least, to be a whole lot of weed.) Apparently, however, opposites attract—and it’s been endlessly entertaining to see these two go to basketball games and Steely Dan concerts together.
The real reason this friendship has so quickly blossomed, though, might have something to do with Davidson’s very public personal struggles over the past year. As Mulaney himself once put it, “A lot of times, it looks like I’m Pete’s lawyer. But for real, I’ve been spending time with Pete to try to show him that you can have a life in comedy that is not insane—a sober, domestic life.” Mulaney has spoken publicly about his own past struggles with substance abuse; in his 2014 comedy special *New in Town, he said, “I don’t drink. I used to drink; then I drank too much and I had to stop. That surprises a lot of audiences, because I don’t look like someone who used to do anything.” So perhaps he and Davidson have connected over some deeply personal matters.
On Tonight Show, however, the comedians were both exceptionally breezy. During his interview, Mulaney also reminisced about his own time on S.N.L.—including an incident in which he completely missed his cue during a sketch starring Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis. As amusing as these stories were, however, we must confess we mostly wanted to hear more about the cannibal neighbor, whom we can only hope will come up in Mulaney’s next solo tour.
